The Middle School Bush Rangers have built a Mia-mia (traditional Aboriginal shelter) with visiting Aboriginal elder, Mr Leonard Thorn, from Mopoke Dreaming.
Mr Thorn has shown and explained to students the skills of weaving materials to make the shelter and shared stories about Aboriginal culture. Students learnt about how Aboriginals used natural materials such as paperbark strips to make the walls, rope – from stripping bark, and green sticks to bend and make the frame of the shelter. They also learnt how to look out for snakes and other unwanted guests coming into the Mia-mia.
Ms Johnson, Bush Ranger teacher, has reported she was very proud of students’ excellent manners and respect towards Mr Thorn and fellow students when working together. Well done to all students involved!
This wonderful shelter will remain at the front of the carpark on the lawn area until end of term.
