At Rockingham Senior High School Education Support Centre we have a large fully fenced horticulture area Within this area are landscaped gardens, a large walk in greenhouse, compost bins, an outdoor classroom and large shed which houses a range of gardening equipment and tools. The garden beds are reticulated and divided between the six year levels at the school giving every class has the opportunity to utilise the garden.
The Horticulture area is utilised across all curriculum areas. The students investigate studies on insects, mini beasts, pollination, plant structure and photosynthesis. All the vegetable and fruit produce grown are used Lifeskills cooking programs.
Students will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that promote behaviour in support of a sustainable environment. They will manage areas of the horticulture area with the worm farm turning waste into nutrient rich fertilisers for the plants and soil in the garden area. Students will enjoy their time spent propagating, nurturing and harvesting in the garden; skills that they can use in their lives beyond school.
