Work place learning classes commence in Year 8 for our students with lessons developed to assist students in recognising their skills, talents and interests – an important prerequisite to assist in choosing meaningful study and work in the future. Lessons also cover work related expectations, provide opportunities to practise the varied communication styles which are part of a typical workplace, expose students to the vocabulary of work and encourage students to start researching a variety of jobs they may never have considered previously.
Senior students are required to take part in a minimum of 55 hours each year in workplaces outside the school in order to comply with the Authority Developed Work Place Learning (ADWPL) program developed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority of WA. A Log Book and Skills Journal must also be completed to pass this program. Students take part in researching work sites which match their interests and may be appropriate for work placements and, with staff support, contact these work places to set up their work experience placements.
In Year 11 student generally do work placements in three one week blocks, trying out a variety of industries in order to experience as much as possible. In Year 12 the expectation is that the student will have narrowed down their job search and may participate in a one day a week work placement with the expectation that the longer period of time working in one industry will assist the student in acquiring work in the future.
